News from The Ecsite-uk Office: science-discovery clubs are judging the Aventis Junior Book Prize
In celebration of Science Year, Ecsite-uk and the BA are creating sciZmic, the national science discovery clubs network, with the tag: "Let sciZmic add pizzazz to Science Year and leave a lasting legacy beyond!"
And currently, 30 sciZmic science clubs are judging the Aventis Junior Book Prize. The winning book and author will be announced on 25 June.
Get a feel for the Science Clubs project by browsing the photographs taken at recent events www.ecsite-uk.net/projects/

Developments in the sector: NESTA-funded Dreamtime Awards
If your creativity and original thinking are being crushed by the size of your in-tray, perhaps it's time to press the escape key. Applications are now open for Dream Time, a new type of award offered within NESTA's (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Fellowship programme.
The award is for exceptional achievers who want concentrated time to follow a passion but who then intend to return to their career, and put what they have discovered into good use. Like all our awards, Dream Time is highly competitive.
NESTA is piloting this award during 2002/03 and aims to make six awards available, each to a maximum of 40,000 pounds.
Further information, award specifications and application packs are available at www.nesta.org.uk/dreamtime [ archived link - may not be active ]
Please tell friends/colleagues who you believe might be appropriate for a Dream Time award.

Resources: statistics and publications on tourism
Here's the e-News 'Think Bubble' from Colin Johnson, Chair of Ecsite-uk, to introduce a valued resource.
One 'member benefit' of Ecsite-uk is a seat for your Chair/Executive Director on the Attractions Forum of the English Tourism Council (ETC).
Publications anticipated in the second half of '02 include 'Visits toVisitor Attractions' and 'Sightseeing in the UK 2001'. Check www.englishtourism.org.uk [ archived link - may not be active ] and click (top right) Tourism Titles.
Reports to the ETC May meeting about the impact of free admission to the National Museums included surging numbers, but shorter dwell times and lower average spend per head (though the total secondary spend has gone up). Social mix is largely unchanged, and charging museums have retained some coach operator loyalty because of the commission which is offered. Diary Dates: July 25-27th British Interactive Group event; November 14-16th Ecsite annual conference
This year, BIG has a special invitation to explainers and front-of-house staff to take part in the international BIG Best Demo Competition.
The British Interactive Group (BIG) would like to encourage interactive centres and other organisations to send more explainers and front of house staff to attend it's annual conference, the BIG Event, at the Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux, in West Sussex.
A discounted 'Explainers Package' will enable two explainers to attend the whole event for just £150. This includes two registration fees, food and sharing a twin room for the nights of Thur 25th and Fri 26th July. In return the explainer must enter the Best Demo Competition, giving a five-minute demonstration on any topic relevant to their institution or centre.
This offer aims to enhance the professional development of explainers by giving them the opportunity to mix with other professionals from a range of hands-on discovery centres, museums, science centres and mobile projects.
This offer is limited to two explainers per organisation, who could be chosen by running your own in-house best demo competition, with attendance at the conference as the prize.
Details of the BIG Event can be found at www.big.uk.com,
For more information, please contact chair@big.uk.com

Thinking and planning ahead: Ecsite's 2002 Annual Conference will be 14-16th November, at South Kensington
